Malou

Malou was biting her nails. She’d never have long nails; she always wound up biting them to bits. The great hall seemed especially big today. There weren’t a lot of students around for the holidays. Then the door to the courtyard swung open and she saw Chamomile hurrying inside. Her tousled red hair and ruddy cheeks made it look as if she had run all the way up the path from the bus stop.

Chamomile quickly found Malou and Kirstine among the students who had silently gathered in the great hall.

“It’s ridiculous that you came all this way,” Malou said. “I could have told you everything over the phone.”

“Oh, stop. I couldn’t just sit at home.” Chamomile gave first Malou and then Kirstine a hearty hug. She looked like she’d been crying.

“Are you guys okay? I’ve been worried sick.”

“What did your mom say about you going back to school when there’s some kind of psychopathic slasher on the loose?” Malou asked as Chamomile squeezed in between them.

“I didn’t tell her. I just said you were all here and I didn’t want to miss out. I’ll go back again tomorrow.”

Malou looked around. Chamomile wasn’t the only one who’d come back to school for the assembly Birgit had announced just that morning. Malou saw both Benjamin and Vitus, and Sara and Sofie were sitting a few tables away next to Molly. Sofie was Anne’s roommate—she was crying quietly with her head on her sister’s shoulder.

“Have you heard anything else?” Chamomile slipped off her big winter coat.

“The teachers were busy investigating Anne’s room all night. But none of them will talk to us. Jakob came and checked on us this morning, but when I asked if they’d caught the perpetrator, he just said it was complicated. What the hell is that supposed to mean?”

“Shh, she’s coming!” Kirstine shushed them and pointed at the door. Birgit had walked in followed by Jens, Zlavko, and Jakob.

Birgit took the floor. “As you all know, a student was badly hurt yesterday evening. I can assure you that Anne is on the mend, and that she regained consciousness this afternoon. She is being transferred to a hospital closer to home this afternoon. Although we expect her to make a full recovery, she will not be in any condition to rejoin us for some time.”

Malou breathed in deeply. She hadn’t even realized that she’d been holding her breath ever since the teachers walked in. Chamomile squeezed Malou’s hand.

“We’re still investigating what happened yesterday, but there is every indication that Anne was possessed by a spirit and that the spirit is responsible for the injuries she sustained last night.”

What . . . A spirit?

Shocked whispering spread through the hall.

“What does that mean? I’ve never heard of a spirit that can injure a person like that,” Molly asked.

Birgit nodded at Jens. “No, the spirit did not directly inflict Anne with the injuries in question.” Jens looked directly at Molly. “The spirit apparently possessed Anne, taking over her body. Anne
